How We Tested

We evaluated each tool over 4 weeks across three real workflows: a startup finance lead doing monthly P&L and reporting, a content-ops lead managing editorial calendars and asset databases, and a 15-person operations team running project tracking and resource planning. We scored on:

Excel is the default spreadsheet for a reason, and Copilot makes it genuinely smarter without abandoning the formula language financial and operations teams already know. In our finance-lead test, Copilot in Excel 365 correctly produced month-over-month variance formulas, structured tables from pasted data, and chart recommendations that didn't look like a 1990s dashboard. It also writes and debugs VLOOKUP and XLOOKUP in plain English, which shaved hours off our analyst's weekly reporting. If you live in Excel and want AI without migration: Excel with Copilot. It is the most honest AI upgrade because it respects the formulas you already know and adds without forcing a new data model.

If your team already shares work in Google Workspace: Google Sheets with Gemini. The live-collaboration + AI combination is smoother than anything in the Microsoft stack for distributed teams.
